The floors of these patrician villas date back to a period between the third and fifth centuries AD and are considered among the most beautiful mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean. The last stop will be at the church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa, built in the thirteenth century, within whose complex you can see the column of St. Paul, where according to tradition the saint was scourged. WED - CURIUM – PAPHOS ► Distances The drive to Paphos reveals ever - changing scenery from vineyards and citrus groves to archaeological sites, all in a beautiful Mediterranean frame. Driving along the coast we head to the prominent archaeological site of Kourion. It is home of a magnificent Greco-Roman Theatre, stately villas and an early Christian Basilica with a baptistery attached to the north face, dating to the 5th century, which probably was the Cathedral of this city kingdom. Next stop is at Petra tou Romiou, regarded since ancient times as the birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility. Once in Paphos we head to the church of Panagia Crysopolitissa , built in the 13th century over the ruins of the largest Early Byzantine basilica on the island. Within the compound one can see St. Paul's Pillar, where, according to tradition, Saint Paul was flogged before the Roman Governor Sergius Paulus was converted to Christianity. Next to the picturesque harbor, in the Houses of Dionysus, we have the chance to admire some of the finest Roman mosaics dating the 3rd to the 5th century AD. This restored Roman villa probably belonged to a member of the ruling Roman class or to a local wealthy family. We finally visit the Tombs of the Kings. Kolossi - Curium –OMODOS –LIMASSOL ) A mixed route that will take you back in time, to discover the secrets of the oldest and most famous wine on the island, the Koumandaria, famous throughout the world, the archaeological site of Curium and the traditional village of Omodos. Departure after breakfast. First stop at Kolossi Castle located in the village of the same name, 11 kilometers west of Lemesos (Limassol). It was built in the 15th century, on the ruins of a previous fortress, dating back to the beginning of the 13th century. Cena e pernottamento . 2° GIORNO: 30/12 – CURIUM – PAPHOS Partenza per l’anfiteatro Greco - Romano di Curium, che fu un importante città-stato, ed oggi è sull’isola uno dei luoghi archeologici più spettacolari. La casa di Eustolio, originalmente una villa romana privata è divenuta durante il primo periodo cristiano, un centro pubblico per le attività ricreative. Breve sosta a Petra tou Rromiou (luogo di nascita di Aphrodite). Proseguimento per visitare I mosaici (casa di Dioniso ). I pavimenti a mosaico di questa villa risalgono ad un periodo tra il III e V secolo d.C e sono considerati tra i più belli del Mediterraneo orientale e proseguimento per la visita della chiesa della Panagia Crysopolitisa costruita nel XII secolo sopra le rovine della più grande basilica del primo periodo bizantino sull’isola. All’interno del complesso si può vedere la colonna di San Paolo dove, secondo la tradizione, San Paolo venne flagellato prima che il governatore romano Sergio Paolo si convertisse al Cristianesimo. Visita delle tombe dei Re che risalgono al IV secolo a.C. 3° GIORNO: 31/12 NICOSIA NORD E SUD Prima colazione in hotel. Incontro con la guida e partenza per Nicosia, la capitale di Cipro delineata dalle antiche mura veneziane, conosciuta grazie alla ricchezza dei reperti archeologici ed artistici racchiusi nei suoi musei e soprattutto per essere l’ultima città al mondo divisa da un muro. Visita dell’ arcivescovado che al suo interno racchiude della Cattedrale di San Giovanni che al suo interno custodisce un ciclo di affreschi del 1731. Passando dalla mura Veneziana e la porta di Famagusta arriveremo al museo di Leventis al centro storico di Nicosia ( Laiki Yitonia ). Tempo libero e proseguiremo per il museo Nazionale dove si potrà ammirare l’affascinante collezione di reperti e tesori ciprioti dal valore inestimabile. Attraversamento del check point, visita del caravanserraio, Buyuk Han, una delle piu’ famose opere architettoniche del periodo ottomano.Il Buyuk Han e’ situato nel centro del mercato tradizionale dentro le mura. Se i check points saranno nuovamente chiusi non visiteremo la parte Nord di Nicosia. 4° GIORNO: 01/01 Kykkos – Kalopanayiotis Prima collazione e partenza per un interessante visita guidata alla scoperta dei monti Troodos . Si prosegue per il monastero di Kykkos fondato nel 1100 per venerare l’Icona della Madonna con Bambino attribuita a San Luca. Tempo libero per il pranzo alle vicinanze del convento e prossima fermata al villaggio di Kalopanayiotis visitando il complesso di San Giovanni Lampadistis patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’Unesco. La chiesa principale del monastero, risalente all’XI secolo, è una struttura ad arco, con pianta a croce greca. La cappella di Agios Ioannis Lampadistis fu costruita nel XII secolo, a nord della prima chiesa, sulla tomba del Santo. Successivamente la cappella crollò e fu, per la maggior parte, ricostruita nel XVIII secolo. Un’altra cappella fu costruita a nord di Agios Ioannis durante la seconda metà del XV secolo. Più tardi essa divenne nota come la “Cappella Latina”, dato che si riteneva fosse stata costruita per i cattolici. Il grande tetto in legno, che ricopre tutte e tre le chiese e conferisce al complesso il suo particolare aspetto, fu aggiunto in epoca successiva. ​ ​ 5° GIORNO:. 02/01 Le vie del vino e le chiese bizantine Dalla Comandaria dei crociati al cabernet .. ( KOLOSSI – MUSEO DEL VINO – OMODOS –LIMASSOL ) Un percorso che vi riporterà indietro nel tempo, alla scoperta dei segreti del più antico e famoso vino dell’isola, la Koumandaria, celebre in tutto il mondo. L’itinerario, che attraversa alcuni villaggi di produzione del vino e della Koumandaria, riporta idealmente al 1192 d.C., quando i Cavalieri di San Giovanni si dedicavano al perfezionamento delle tecniche di produzione di ciò che, forse, è stato il primo vino della storia ad essere identificato dal suo nome, Koumandaria appunto. Il sole, grande alleato dei viticoltori, in parte essicca le uve vendemmiate, concentrando il loro naturale contenuto zuccherino e arricchendone, così, il gusto. Partenza dopo colazione per conoscere la storia del vino dell’ isola e le chiese bizantine di Troodos . Primo stop al castello di Kolossi situato nell’omonimo villaggio, 11 chilometri ad ovest di Lemesos (Limassol). Fu eretto nel XV secolo, sulle rovine di una precedente fortezza, risalente all’inizio del XIII secolo. Quest’ultimo apparteneva ai Cavalieri di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme ed era la sede della più importante Centrale di Comando tra quelle ad essi facenti capo. Per qualche anno, nel XIV secolo, fu sotto il controllo dei Cavalieri Templari. L’area produceva ed esportava, inoltre, il tradizionale vino dolce di Cipro, divenuto noto come “Vin de Commanderie”, o Commandaria. Questo è uno dei più antichi vini “a denominazione” del mondo, avendo portato lo stesso nome per otto secoli. Meeting with the guide and departure for Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, whose city centre is hedged by majestic Venetian walls. It is renowned for the archaeological and artistic treasures collected in its museums and, especially, to be the last city in the world divided by a wall. First visit at Archbishopric complex, which hosts the famous Byzantine museum, one of the most important museums in Europe of its kind, featuring the largest collection of icons on the island, and the Cathedral of St. John the inside contains a fresco cycle dating 1731. Through the Venetian Walls, via Famagusta Gate, we get to the Archaeological Museum where you can admire the fascinating collection of Cypriot artefacts and treasures of inestimable value. We continue to the old town of Nicosia (Laiki Yitonia), across the check-point, we will be guided to the Caravanserai, Buyuk Han, one of the best preserved Ottoman architecture. The Buyuk Han stands in the centre of the traditional market, within the walls, nearby the Selimiye Mosque, known formerly as the St.Sophia Cathedral. Return to the hotel in the afternoon. WED TROODOS - Byzantine Churches (San Nicolaos, Kakopetria, Podithou, Omodos) Breakfast at the hotel. Return to the hotel in the afternoon. THU CURIUM - KOLOSSI - APOLLO YLATIS - half day Breakfast at the hotel. Between history and mythology, we will be guided, today, across different ages.Proceeding Eastbound along the beautiful coast, we stop at Petra tou Romiou, where, according to Greek mythology, Aphrodite emerged from the foam of the water. Then we visit Curium, an important city-state, today one of the most important archaeological sites on the island. Amongst the rest, It features a magnificent Greek-roman amphitheatre of the second century BC and the house of Eustolios, originally a Roman villa, used as a public center for recreation activities, next to an early Christian basilica dating from the fifth century, which was probably the Cathedral of Kourion. Next stop at Kolossi Castle, a fine example of medieval military architecture, originally built in the thirteenth century. After the fall of Acre in 1291, became the military base of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The last visit will take us to the Temple of Apollo Ylatis, god of the woods, whose cult was celebrated between the eighth century BC and the fourth century AD. Kolossi - Curium –OMODOS –LIMASSOL ) A mixed route that will take you back in time, to discover the secrets of the oldest and most famous wine on the island, the Koumandaria, famous throughout the world, the archaeological site of Curium and the traditional village of Omodos. Departure after breakfast. First stop at Kolossi Castle located in the village of the same name, 11 kilometers west of Lemesos (Limassol). It was built in the 15th century, on the ruins of a previous fortress, dating back to the beginning of the 13th century. The latter belonged to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and was the headquarters of the most important Command Center. For a few years, in the 14th century, it was under the control of the Knights Templar. The area also produced and exported the traditional sweet wine of Cyprus, which became known as "Vin de Commanderie", or Commandaria. This is one of the oldest “appellation” wines in the world, having borne the same name for eight centuries. We will then reach Curium, an important city-kingdom, today one of the most important archaeological sites on the island.
